Hi, my name is Stephen and I run Alcohol Free Magazine, along with my wife Niamh and my young son Liam, who pops in from time to time. I’m a published short story writer who writes thriller and supernatural horror. I’m working on a horror novel at the moment called ‘Darkness’. Darkness is about a dark entity who haunts a history teacher which leads him into discovering a hidden family secret. It’s the longest short story I’ve ever written. ‘The Lady in Red’ is the short story that inspired me to write the book. This story gives a glimpse at Tom’s wife, and what happened to her…

Why did I set up Alcohol Free Magazine?

I’ve always wanted to set up a magazine of some sort and when my wife was pregnant with Liam, we tried a lot of NA drinks which inspired me to start it up. I gave up drinking 14 years ago. I suffer with OCD and anxiety. Drink filled a void that didn’t need to be filled and I’ve been so much better since I stopped. The magazine has been brilliant, and I’ve met a community that are great craic. The NA Happy Hour zoom call on Sunday is one of my favourites. It also gives me a chance to chat with drinks producers which is amazing, and a real privilege…

What’s in store for the future?

Hopefully get the book finished, which would be amazing. I’ll keep going growing Alcohol Free Mag and I’m hoping to do some charity work with mental health organisations. I’ve a few more projects coming soon, including an article for the Belfast Telegraph. We’re also working in the background at a long-term project that we would love to make happen which is the Squeaky Door Cafe. Stay tuned, more to come….
